College regalia is the traditional graduation gear, worn by those who are graduating and faculty, such as a cap and gown, tassel and graduation stole.

College graduation is a big milestone and dressing appropriately is key.

Consider wearing a semi-formal dress, dress pants and a polo or button down, paired with heels, flats or dress shoes. Don’t forget the most important part: your cap and gown, tassel and graduation stole.

Here’s how to wear your college graduation regalia:
  1. Start with the gown. Put your arms through the sleeves so the fabric hangs down. Check the fit: your sleeves should reach your wrists and the bottom should land between your mid-calf and ankles.
  2. Zip the gown up, as it is meant to be worn closed.
  3. Next, it’s time for your stole(s) and cord(s). Drape your stoles first — if you have multiple stoles, put the most important or widest stole first and layer additional stoles on top, keeping them centered and visible. Then, place your cords on top and make sure both sides hang evenly and lie flat against your chest.
  4. Now for the cap, also called a mortarboard. Use the loop to hook your tassel onto the button on top.
  5. Find the pointed edge and place that in the front. Put the cap on with the elastic band in the back. It should sit flat on your head and level with the floor, not tilted back.
  6. If you are a bachelor's student, wear the tassel on the right side. You’ll move it to the left during the ceremony. For master’s and doctoral degrees, keep the tassel on the left from the start.
