PUTTING IN THE DESIGN WORK

Modules offer creative design options and strengthen coverage.

MODULAR DESIGNS FEATURE MINI-LAYOUTS WITHIN A BIG LAYOUT. Modular layouts often use several story packages, each containing copy and photos, on each page or spread.

Perhaps most importantly, modular design offers the ability to cover more students on each yearbook spread and cover a wider variety of topics.

Jostens Page Surfers offer Modular Templates that are flexible and easy to use. However, it’s also easy to master modular design by taking a standard layout and converting it to a modular design. Consider all or some of the modular photo blocks on the design as mini-layouts. Design each mini-layout independently, complete with consistent internal margins and a dominant element.

This complete spread demonstrates how each element begins and ends on a grid line - never in the middle of a column.

Standard Layout with only three modules – the quote at the top, the center of the page and the Q&A at the bottom.

Modular design adapts the photo boxes by creating mini-layouts within them.

Modular design adapts the layout by by creating mini-layouts (mods) within photo boxes or content areas. Each mod contains more photos than were previously possible.

MODULAR DESIGN ENCOURAGES CREATIVE STORY AND PHOTO DISPLAY. Stories and photos become creative design elements, allowing for few or many topics to be covered on each double page spread.

Quick Reads/Infographics: Emphasis is placed on typographic and visual enhancement of stories by using lists, question/answers, data boxes and infographics.

Photo Display: A greater number of photos are used with approaches such as photo montages instead of single, large photo blocks. And, of course, photos are used extensively in presenting quotes.
